Svadhyaya: Self Portraiture as Self-Study
Svādhyāya is the Sanskrit word for self-study. It is also one of the niyamas (observances/tenets) of yoga practice. Through introspection, we can gain better understanding of ourselves, of both our conscious and subconscious, and thereby open ourselves up to a better understanding the world around us, tapping into the superconscious. The processes of both svadyaya and self-portraiture are that of discovery, grief, celebration, play, prayer, and poetry.
